To begin writing programs in Java you will first need to download and install the Java 2 Software Development Kit (SDK) from Sun Microsystems. The Java 2 SDK is also referred to as the Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition
The Java 2 SDK is a complete software development environment for Java, including a collection of software components that you can use in your
applications. These components provide capabilities that are commonly needed in computer programs. In other words, these components are provided
so that you don't have to "reinvent the wheel" when you write your programs.
The Java 2 SDK also contains a number of tools, including a Java compiler and a Java program launcher. You'll be using these two tools
extensively throughout the course as you develop your own Java programs.
Depending on how fast your connection to the Internet is, downloading the Java 2 SDK may take well over an hour.
In the next lesson you will create and compile your first Java program.
